Better Sleep

One thing most insomniacs agree on is this: the harder they try to sleep, the less they succeed. It is very frustrating not to be able to go to sleep. And that frustration then makes it even harder to get some shut-eye. It's a vicious circle. But there are ways to break that circle.

The most common form of insomnia is called 'psycho-reactive insomnia'. This usually occurs when a person cannot shake off the thoughts or troubles they may have had throughout the day. Or they may be thinking about the next day, what they have to do, and will they be able to do it. So, insomnia is usually only the tip of the iceberg. It is just a symptom. The underlying cause can be stress, anxiety, tension.

Hypnosis works on insomnia by making suggestions to your subconscious. What is the subconscious? The subconscious, or unconscious mind, as we also call it, contains all your wisdom, memories and intelligence. It is a source of creativity and directs nearly all of your behaviour, for instance, breathing. Imagine how powerful this is when you can add suggestions for sleep directly targeting this powerful part of yourself.

Once you’ve listened to the hypnotherapy download a few times the suggestions will be firmly embedded into your psyche. This means that you will be able to systematically relax every part of your body – just as suggested on the recording – any time you need to.

And once you’ve got to the download a few times, just hearing the music or my voice will tell your subconscious it is ‘sleep’ time. Just as staying awake becomes a ‘habit’ a hypnotherapy recording can help form a new ‘habit’ whereby you relax so deeply it’s difficult to keep awake!

But, as well as listening to your hypnotherapy download, it is important to deal with the cause of your insomnia too. It may be that you lead a very hectic lifestyle or are stressed. Make sure that you take some time out for yourself each day – even if it’s just five minutes to sit quietly, close your eyes, maybe while listening to some calming music. Try anything that brings you back in touch with your body and what’s going on. Imagine letting worries go into a large balloon above your head and see it all floating away.

Here are some tips for things you can do during the day that could make getting to sleep easier at night:

  • Think about how you would sit if you were happy and relaxed – now sit that way.

  • Think about how your facial muscles would be if you were happy and relaxed – maybe put a smile on your face anyway!

  • Think about everything you have to be happy about – come on there must be one thing! The sun’s shining, you have your health, you have a good friend who listens to you..

  • Think about the kind of future you want for yourself and write an action plan, starting with small steps, of how to get there.

The important point about insomnia is not to fight it because, as all insomniacs know, that will only make things worse. Work on staying relaxed through the day and train your subconscious with hypnotherapy.
